A DIFFERENT KIND OF ENERGY
FRS’s revolutionary blend of nutrients extends your body’s , fueling you up when you need it while supporting your health over the long haul. There’s no jittery feeling or roller-coaster ride – just prolonged energy that helps keep you focused and fully charged.

That energy comes from our secret weapon, quercetin, an antioxidant found in foods like blueberries, apples and grapes. Its incredible ability to enhance your body’s is what keeps you feeling energized longer. Add a host of essential vitamins and you’re ready to tackle anything from minor workouts to a major marathon.

A single 11.5-ounce serving of FRS contains a healthy amount of quercetin, but one you’d have a hard time getting on your own; that is, unless you have a tendency to eat 40 apples in a single sitting.

HOW TO USE FRS HEALTHY ENERGY
For best results, take 2-3 servings per day. One in the morning, one in the afternoon and whenever you need extra energy. Athletes take 30 minutes before exercise.
THE SCIENCE OF QUERCETIN
Endurance and VO2max Study:
Davis, Carlstedt et al. 2009
An independent, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study showed that when 12 healthy, active (but not highly trained) men and women consumed 500 mg of quercetin (QU995™) in an enriched drink mix twice daily for 7 days, they experienced a 13.2 % increase in endurance and a 3.9 % increase in VO2max (a typical measure of fitness). The study has been published online in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism.

Sports Performance Study:
MacRae, H. and Mefferd, K. 2006
An independent, double-blind, placebo – controlled crossover study on the effect of FRS on cycling performance in eleven elite cyclists was completed at Pepperdine University and published in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. The results were dramatic: a 3.1% increase in performance–one minute and 31 seconds improvement in time to complete a 30km simulated mountainous time trial.

Immune System Study:
Neiman, David, Henson, DA, et al. 2007
A clinical study, funded in part by the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) showed the antioxidant quercetin significantly reduced incidence of upper respiratory tract illness during the two week period following intensified exercise. Researchers also reported enhanced alertness and reaction time in athletes taking the quercetin supplement during high stress. Forty test subjects were subjected to extreme physical stress during a five week period. Half were given 1,000 mg of quercetin daily (the approximate amount in 3 servings of FRS) and half were given a placebo. Results showed:

Work Performance Study:
Durak, E. and Bell, M. May 2005
During a six-week study, university employees were asked to perform their daily jobs, which required physical exertion, lifting, repetitive movements and attention to detail. At the end of the study, subjects experienced improvements in various measures of work performance, as measured in a Work Productivity Assessment Index survey.

Gradual ramp up of energy, November 24, 2008
By

Like many folks, I did the free trial but did not read the fine print so ended up getting a big box for big bucks. However, this is one of the few times that I am glad to have made a mistake. Since I got the delivery right before I head out for a business trip in Europe, I decided to test this out while on trip.

I must say I am a convert! This stuff is great. Unlike coffee, it does not pick you up quickly and crash you. It does take some time, but for the first time since my twenties, I felt fine after landing and working a full day with no problem sleeping afterward. It felt like my jetlags were over before it started. NowadaysI don’t go anywhere without it. I still drink coffee, but lot less than before. My co-workers make fun of me whenever I mix the power in the water bottle to create a florescent yellow liquid, which they call kryptonite, but it sure helps me to concentrate while awake and puts me to sleep when I need the rest.

This review is from: FRS Healthy Energy Chews, Lemon Lime, 30-Count Bag (Health and Beauty)

I’ve been a pro/elite multisport athlete for over 25 years. As a clinician and human performance consultant, I am always interested with advances in sports medicine which includes taking another look at previous studies. The “main” ingredient of FRS is quercetin. This is typically found in grapes, apple skins, and onions. While it’s good to get your nutrients from natural sources like these, while you’re on the move, using sports science supplements can be better.
The quercetin in FRS is Q995. After looking this up, I eventually landed on the DARPA site. Our DoD funds advanced research focused on optimizing our military needs, which includes nutritional support. There is a biotech company that was awarded a DARPA grant which eventually yielded quercetin Q995. This company makes a chew that is available for sale to both military and civilian personnel. For active and retired military they have a great discount. It looks like FRS licenses the chews and formula from this biotech company. In fact, I bought both the FRS chews and the chews from the biotech company and they were identical, except for the wrapping, and cost. FRS has a steep mark-up.
The chews work well for hard training and racing. They are very convenient and taste pretty good. They do not require much chewing, enough to get your salivary enzymes working. They require a sip of water to flush down.
The caffeine level for 2 chews is non-ergogenic, meaning, it is not enough to trip your nervous system thus cause undesirable side effects. Rather, it’s the amount that some research shows can help the absorbsion of other nutrients like B vitamins. However, some clinicians disagree that non-ergogenic caffeine loads have value.
The research on quercetin does seem to support that it can help alleviate certain inflammatory responses. For me, I have been taking quercetin for a couple of years to alleviate mild asthma.
As with all supplements, one needs to be mindful with dosage. These are not candy. There have been toxic load studies done. So the consumer should be aware not to give these to children, and not to eat more than what’s recommended for a daily dose. Moreover, anyone with medical conditions should speak with his/her clinical practitioner before consuming these.
FRS has a canned drink and one that you can mix with water. The low cal flavors are good, and easy for the GI to process.
Lastly, given that Lance Armstrong is on the Board for FRS, some of their sales proceeds are directed to his Livestrong Foundation.

Gave me headaches, September 1, 2008

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What’s this?)

I wanted to try these chews because I am frequently working odd hours and it plays heck with getting to sleep sometimes. That makes me tired and dragged out the next day when I need to be alert and on the ball.

So, that is what I was looking for – sustained energy to keep me awake and alert. Physically, I am in fair shape I think and I am in my early 40s. I do some physical stuff at my job but there is a lot of sedentary stuff too.

The recommended dosage is two chews. I found that two chews gave me a pretty intense headache within a short amount of time – 30 to 45 minutes maybe.

Cutting back to one chew still gave me a headache but not as intense.

Energy levels were good, even great, and even better I didn’t feel jittery. I did feel like I was ‘zooming’ a bit when they first kick in but it was a mild sensation and not long lived (good thing). The boost seemed to last 4 to 5 hours with two chews and maybe 3 or so with one chew.

They are very convenient to use as long as you can store them away from heat – like not in your pocket or on the dash of your vehicle because they do get melty.

They were a little too intense for me even without the headache problem. They do what they claim to do so 4 stars with the last star held back because of the headaches and upfront intensity.

I think a really active person will have a good experience with them.

Darin
